Team USA Wins Gold, Metro Atlanta Standouts Shine on the World Stage

The gold medal is coming home, and Metro Atlanta played a major role in bringing it back.

Team USA captured its eighth consecutive FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup gold medal, defeating Serbia 107-81 in the championship game to once again establish itself as the world's premier youth basketball program. Among the players representing the United States were Asa Montgomery and AJ Williams, two of Metro Atlanta's brightest young stars who continue to elevate Georgia basketball on the international stage.

For Asa Montgomery, the tournament was another milestone in what has quickly become one of the country's most promising young careers. The Hillgrove High School standout averaged 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, while shooting an efficient 63.6% from the field throughout the tournament. Montgomery showcased his versatility as a two-way forward, consistently impacting the game as a scorer, rebounder, playmaker, and defender. His best performance came in the Round of 16, where he erupted for 23 points against Cameroon while adding five rebounds.

Fellow Metro Atlanta standout AJ Williams also delivered several impressive performances throughout Team USA's championship run. The dynamic wing demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the nation's elite young prospects, highlighted by a 25-point, 7-rebound, 2-assist performance against Japan during group play. Williams' combination of athleticism, shot-making, and defensive versatility gave Team USA another dangerous weapon throughout the tournament.

With both Montgomery and Williams wearing USA across their chest, Georgia basketball was once again well represented on the international stage. Their contributions helped Team USA complete another undefeated run and further solidified Metro Atlanta as one of the nation's premier producers of elite basketball talent.
