Unfinished Business: David Whitaker Returns to Langston Hughes

Marc WilkinsJune 29, 2026

For some athletes, the next step means leaving home. For David Whitaker, it meant staying where he believes he has more to accomplish.

The Class of 2029 standout has decided to return to Langston Hughes High School, choosing to continue his journey in Georgia rather than pursue another opportunity out of state. While another option in Iowa was on the table, Whitaker ultimately followed what felt right.

"I love being in Atlanta. It was either Langston or a school in Iowa, but I love Georgia," Whitaker said.

His decision to stay in Georgia was influenced by one of the state's biggest basketball stars, Anthony Edwards.

"I want to stay in Georgia because of Anthony Edwards," Whitaker said. "He's the reason why I changed my number from 12 to 5."

The number change represents more than a jersey. It's a tribute to a player whose path from Georgia to the NBA has become a source of motivation for Whitaker as he continues writing his own story.

Returning to Langston Hughes also means returning with purpose. Rather than seeking a fresh start elsewhere, Whitaker is embracing the opportunity to continue developing in a program he believes in while helping the Panthers pursue their goals.

The chapter isn't closing. It's continuing.

For David Whitaker, the decision to stay at Langston Hughes comes down to two words: Unfinished Business.
