David Whitaker Reclassifies to the Class of 2030, Transfers to Iowa United Prep
Growth often requires stepping outside of what's familiar.
For David Whitaker, that meant leaving Metro Atlanta for Iowa United Prep, where he'll continue his basketball journey after officially reclassifying from the Class of 2029 to the Class of 2030. The move gives the athletic guard an opportunity to develop in a nationally respected prep school environment while preparing for the next stage of his career.
"Iowa was the right fit because of their strong development system and the unselfish culture they've built," Whitaker said. "From the coaching staff to the players, everything felt like a place where I could continue to grow."
Whitaker's offseason has extended beyond his move to Iowa. He is also currently participating in the Overtime Elite (OTE) tryout process, another opportunity to compete against some of the country's top young talent. While the evaluation is still ongoing, the invitation reflects the continued attention his athleticism and potential have earned.
Development has become the driving force behind every decision Whitaker has made this offseason. Rather than chasing recognition or individual accolades, he's focused on becoming a more complete player through consistent work and daily improvement.
That mindset shows up in the way he approaches every aspect of the game. Whether it's creating defensive stops, crashing the boards, attacking the basket, or making winning plays on offense, Whitaker takes pride in doing whatever his team needs. While versatility has long been one of his strengths, he believes one area of his game has taken the biggest leap.
"My shooting ability has improved tremendously," Whitaker said.
The improvement is the result of countless hours in the gym. Along with becoming a more consistent shooter, Whitaker has dedicated significant time to improving his pace, developing a dependable mid-range game, and studying the details that separate good players from great ones.
Moving away from home presents its own challenges, but Whitaker views the transition as another opportunity to grow. Learning a new system, building chemistry with new teammates, and competing in a different environment are all experiences he believes will help prepare him for the next level.
His motivation has never changed.
Family continues to fuel his work ethic, along with a personal desire to become the best player he can be. That purpose drives the early mornings, extra workouts, and commitment to improving every day.
When asked what success looks like this season, Whitaker didn't mention statistics or personal recognition.
"My team goal is simple," he said. "Win… without doubt."
That answer reflects the team-first mentality coaches value. Whitaker believes being a great teammate means bringing energy every day, encouraging those around him, and doing everything possible to help the group succeed.
Away from basketball, he understands the importance of the classroom. His advice to younger athletes is simple: stay on top of your schoolwork, complete assignments on time, ask questions when you need help, and never underestimate the value of your education. Basketball can create opportunities, but academic discipline helps keep those opportunities open.
As he prepares for the next chapter of his career, Whitaker isn't focused on shortcuts or immediate results. He's committed to trusting the process, embracing every opportunity to improve, and continuing to build toward his long-term goals.
For one of Metro Atlanta's most athletic young guards, Iowa United Prep represents more than a new school. It's the next step in a journey built on discipline, development, and a willingness to chase growth wherever it leads.
